Dan King's Home Bar

It seems I hear about "man caves" a lot these days. Just about every guy I know wants or has one; that special place at home that is entirely his. Of course, how that space looks depends on the guy and his interests. Around here, a man cave looks an awful lot like a dusty clay studio (I've got one too and I'm not even a man), for others it's a movie screening room, or a place to pay homage to a favorite sports team. For others it's a bar. In this case Dan King's basement bar. Earlier in the summer PGC teamed up with Jack Daniels Single Barrel to give away one of our growlers through their blog and Facebook pages. The criteria? "Post a comment describing something you've made that you're really proud of." While the contest used random selection to get to the winner, it turned out to be a pretty great story about what inspired Dan King to turn his basement into his very own bar. I'll let him tell you in his own words. I’ve always wanted to have a little bar in my house.  It was something that I just never got around to – or maybe it was more the case that I never put aside the time or money for it.   Well, two Christmases ago, I decided the time was right to finally build my bar. You see, a few months earlier, my dad lost his battle with cancer.  For those few months between his passing and Christmas, my head was flooded with memories of my dad.  I wanted to find a way to keep some of those memories tangible. The first memory that I knew I just HAD to include in my bar plan was a collection of mugs with decidedly odd faces on them.  During his retirement, Dad collected quite a few Toby mugs, which I inherited.  A few months before he passed, my brothers and I went to visit our dad for a boys’ weekend.  This is when Dad went through his things and passed his collection of mugs...

Maker's Mark Bios: Jordan Morris

At Portland Growler Company we partner with studios that care about nurturing their employees creative passions. Our ceramic production partner, Mudshark Studios exemplifies this sort of partnership. The creative endeavors, experience and contributions of each member of the team that produces our growlers can be seen in each and every growler they make. Take a look at the bottom of your growler to see the initials of that growler's maker; maker's marks are our way of helping you put a face with a name and show you what true handcrafted quality means to us. We recently visited with our team at Mudshark and we asked each artist the same questions about life, beer, and art and we'll be introducing you to them here. Meet Jordan Morris. Jordan is the master packer and shipper of all things growler. While you won't find his initials on the bottom of your growler, Jordan is the guy responsible for packing and shipping thousands of growlers every year. If you've received one of our growlers in the mail, it's more than likely this man was responsible for getting it to you safely.     Name: Jordan Morris Hometown: Maple Valley, WA- glorious, glorious Maple Valley. (No, of course you haven’t heard of it.) Education/Life Experience:  BA in Theater Performance from  Central Washington University How did you get started at Mudshark? I used to work at Office Depot with Michael and it was terrible. Michael got a job at Mudshark and I yelled at him for leaving me. When Mudshark moved into the new space I heard they were hiring, so I called Brett... and I called and called. Feeling optimistic, I gave my 2 weeks notice at Office Depot and on my last day I just showed up at Mudshark and starting packing boxes, until Brett walked by and said “ok you’re hired.”   What’s Your Favorite Beer or Beverage to Fill Your Growler with? If I ever actually put Laphroaig Scotch in a growler, I’d say that was my favorite, but I haven’t done that. It’s a really nice scotch; it’s like a peaty...
